Listen to Wildfire while reading the interview:
How did you get into making music?
I have always been surrounded by a musical family, so I’d say it all began there. My parents also used to educate me with the most iconic films that I would take so much inspiration from, including Coyote Ugly, where Piper Perabo plays the coolest badass aspiring songwriter! I think I knew that’s what I wanted to do all along even when I was pursuing other things such as football; I’d always write songs in my spare time and jot them down in my funky friends journal!
Can you tell us the story behind your new single Wildfire? How did that track come about?
At the time of writing Wildfire, I was completely smitten by this guy. I saw him a lot due to the fact we worked together. It was one of those crushes where you’re in a room with this person, and you can’t help overthink everything you’re doing as you’re so worried about what they’ll think of you. He was so unbelievably kind and had this beautiful aura which had me in a complete whirlwind when I was around him but … his heart belonged to somebody else! Wildfire is this rollercoaster story of my emotions but put in a way that is much more fierce and to the point. I remember going into the studio and pouring my heart out to my amazing producer, and he asked me straight up, ‘ what do you want to say’ and I tiptoed around the fact that I just wanted this guy to break up with his girlfriend and be with me! (Yes, I just said that!!) to which my producer said ‘ then just say it.’
I can only write when I’m completely inspired by something. There have been so many times where I’ve tried to force it, but the song will never end up having my whole heart.”

What or who has influenced your new material?
I’ve had a lot of influences come around within the last two years, such as Sigrid and Maggie Rogers, however, with the new material, I really wanted to go back to where I came from. Wildfire has been inspired by my love for the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush.
When writing a song, what do you usually start with? Where does the immediate inspiration for a song come from?
I’ll always start with the chorus of a song. First, I’ll lay down a chord progression that satisfies the mood of whatever I want to write about, and then I’ll move on to finding a lyrical hook. I write the verses around the chorus; that way (hopefully), the song won’t be in danger of not going anywhere or lacking excitement. I can only write when I’m completely inspired by something. There have been so many times where I’ve tried to force it, but the song will never end up having my whole heart.

What is the next big thing coming up for you this year?
I’m hoping to get into a lot more sessions this year. As well as being an artist, I love to write for other people, so this is something I want to fulfill and succeed in right now. I’m excited to see the reaction Wildfire receives, and we’ll see where we go from there…
