Peachy had the chance to talk inspirations, aesthetics and the future that awaits the duo NANCY, ahead of the release of their new single “It’s Just You”.
First, what’s the story about how the project NANCY came about?
We didn’t meet in the most serendipitous of ways ha. We met in a writing session, that was set up for one of our own solo projects. But we both instantly connected musically and were both in a similar place as artists, where we were feeling like we were looking for inspiration and for a change.
The music we started to create, inspired and I guess rekindled that love for writing again. We wrote so much material, so quickly and had such a connection to the songs that we knew the music had created it’s own world.
What are some of your primary inspirations? Both musically and lyrically?
We would say we are both inspired by artists like Neil Young, Mazzy star, Lou Reed, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kacey Musgraves, Cigarettes after Sex. Quite eclectic mix there.
I think it gave us a lot of freedom having anonymity in Berlin. We started playing some gigs over there and there’s such a creative buzz, I think we both found it super inspiring.”
If you could choose any artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?
Phoebe Bridgers would be awesome. Her ability to write such natural lyrics, that evoke so much nostalgia in them is amazing! so we just think she’s be really cool to write with. Shout out to Phoebe, please bring us on tour lol
Listen to the new single “It’s Just You” by NANCY on Spotify:
You began writing back and forth between London and Berlin – how come, and what did being in the two environments bring to the process?
Freddie moved out to Berlin and we had a little bit of a hiatus as a band. But neither of us wanted to give up on NANCY cause we believe in the songs so much. So we started going back and forth between London and Berlin to continue writing new material and recording.I think it gave us a lot of freedom having anonymity in Berlin. We started playing some gigs over there and there’s such a creative buzz, I think we both found it super inspiring.
The music and the aesthetic universe you guys manage to create is very well put together. How’d you describe the “Nancy universe”? And how important is the aesthetic aspect of your creative expression to you guys?
The NANCY universe is dreamy with a bit of grit. We’re very inspired by film, especially Tarantino and gothic horrors. We use a lot of black and white in soft tones. I saw the Chris Isaak video for Wicked Games when I was a small child and I think it got embedded in my subconscious, cause I am always drawn to black and white images the most.
The aesthetic is very important to us because we try to create a picture in the listeners mind, through the stories in our songs and the visuals just help to connect the dots.
…And moving on, what are your hopes for the coming years?
To go on tour across Europe and America, play some festivals and hopefully have an album out by the end of the year!
